Here’s an idea, instead of laying awake at night waiting for someone to disrupt your business, why not try actually innovating? What a losing mindset.

SMS has been a colossal rip-off forever. That carriers knew this. They knew such a scam couldn’t last forever. Yet they did nothing, sealing their fate.

This also proves that Apple was smart not to tell the carriers about iMessage before they launched it. They would have bitched and moaned and tried to kill it before it ever saw the light of day.

CISPA is orders of magnitude worse than SOPA/PIPA. We need to mobilize like we did before, and stop this.

1. Call my local Barnes & Noble to see if they have the book I’m interested in, in stock.

They do. The clerk at the other end of the phone line takes my name and says it’ll be waiting for me behind the counter.

2. Drive to B&N and pick up said book.

While checking the book out, I realize that the “Online Access” code that comes with Lippincott Williams & Wilkins titles appeared to have been used(They are sold as a sticker with the silver ‘lottery ticket’ stuff you scratch off to reveal the code underneath). If that sticker has been scratched off, you are not allowed to return the book if, say, you find out that the code has been registered already. Since the code is registered, you also can’t USE the online content you have paid for. So the clerk expresses surprise and offers to order the book and have it shipped to the store.

He says it’ll take 2-3 days.

He also offers to see if some other nearby B&N stores have the book in stock. And by that, I mean, he directs me to the Customer Service desk at the back of the store where I can ask someone there to look it up for me(apparently the computer terminal in the checkout line doesn’t have that ability).

I walk to the back of the store and find that the CS desk is unstaffed and so I go looking for the medical reference section(I was looking for a exam prep book in the first place).

I find some similar books and decide to see if they’re available online cheaper.

3. Fire up the Amazon app for iPhone and scan the barcodes of books I’m interested in as well as searching for and finding the book I had originally reserved.

4. Order two books(the original one I was after and another) for next day local delivery and have my total be less than what B&N would have charged me for those books had I purchased them in-store.

5. Walk out, drive home.

Now, I generally don’t like selecting things like “local delivery” because they seem like luxuries and I can wait for the shipping anyway, thank you very much. But when the cost of the “local delivery” is LESS than it would be to buy the book in the store I have to wonder what’s going on. I suspect that if I had been shopping earlier in the day and had ordered before the cut off, I might have been able to select to have the order delivered THE SAME DAY. So that’s ordering a book, having it delivered the same day and all for less than the cost of me driving to the store and picking it up myself?

I will add that one advantage of going to a store is that you’re able to flip through the book to see if it’s really what you want, and that’s what prompted me to order the additional book. Still, though, If I can get a guaranteed new copy of the same book at a cheaper price delivered to me the next day or even the same day, why should I get out of my comfy chair?

p.s.- I didn’t shower for the bookstore, so in that respect, online and real stores are pretty much the same.
